U.S. Incarceration Stats

1. Go to www.nationmaster.com and compare your country with the United States. Look for statistical differences in crimes such as robbery, drugs, murders, etc... You may also use any other statistic that you find to be of significance to the incarceration rate comparison. Spend a little time reviewing the information so that you are prepared for the blog prompt.

2. Record the information you find important into Pages for later.

3. Use google.com to find the penalty for at least three of the previous crimes that you have found. Do these crimes have a harsher penalty in the US or in your country? Does this affect the prison http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifpopulation difference?

4. If you find something in particular that you would like to share with the class go to http://corkboard.me/s1oQNOvFhO and post.

5. Post to the blog a paragraph detailing your findings. Be sure to answer the http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.giffollowing prompt: What are the contributing factors to the differences between your country and the United States in terms of incarceration rates, crime and punishment?

6. When finished, go to https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B7LL8WNDFlw8U18xS1Q4clZRdWU5TFp6cVpCN2RpZw and watch the video on the Texas prison reform. In a separate discussion, post an answer to the following question: Do you think the new model in Texas will help curb incarceration rates in the United States? If not, what do you think is the answer to our current prison problem. Be sure to substantiate your position.

Russia and the United states seem to be pretty close related when it comes to crimes. If either are ahead of the other in a certain statistic, the other is not far behind. I suppose this would be because they are both big countries. What really surprised us was the fact Russia is ranked first in judges and magistrates while America is second. To our knowledge, America had the best court system in the world. Another fact that is shocking would have to be that America is ranked first for the most crime. I do know that it has a lot of crime that happens but we were not expecting it to be the first ranked, especially compared to Russia.

After what information we have collected, I have observed the lesser populace of criminal people in Israel. This is shown in the fact that the United States has 182 times more prisoners and 26 percent more murders per 100,000 people. This mostly because first of all, the United States has a much larger amount of drug income than Israel and due to this, the United States has cracked down on the drug war.

India vs America.
The amount of embezzlements in both countries are almost the same, with America being just above the other. America has 8x times more frauds than India with 370k. Both countries are involved heavily in drugs, dealing and buying. Per 100k people, murders are about the same, with an average of 5.7 between the two. America has 140% more police officers than India. America also has 5x more prisoners than India, with a total of 2 million. 3% of the prisoners in India are woman, opposed to the 9% of women incarcerated in America. Rape crimes are 17x worse in America with 30.2 per 100k people.

When comparing the United Kingdom to the United States, we found that the total crimes are higher in the United States. However, the total crime victims are higher in the United Kingdom. There were some drastic differences between the two places. For instance, in the number of murders with firearms, the United Kingdom is ranked 29th while the United States is ranked 1st, 668 times more than the UK. Another difference is that in the United States, the number of car thefts is three times more than in the united Kingdom. Given these facts, this doesn't mean the United Kingdom is safer. The number of rape victims in the UK is 125% more than the U.S. and it is found that people in the United States feel safer walking in the dark than people in the United Kingdom.

China's crime rate is very low compared to the united states. China has a ratio 470 to the united states 42 executions. China has a death penalty for drugs and bribery. China is a big maker of heroine. Chine is ranked number one for executions. Kaylay currington &hayley woods

Pakistan's only way to execute is hanging people. I think that Pakistan has a higher execution rate because it is cheaper there to execute. The united states is ranked first in prison population. Pakistan is ranked 12th so the U.S. must take law more serious. The U.S. and Pakistan have many differences because they are in two different parts of the world. Corey and Joey

Any criminal statistic for the United States far exceeds any statistics for Jamaica. There are over 1,500 jails in the U.S. compared to Jamaica's seven. The crime rate is much higher in the U.S., thus our country needs more jails and prisons.

In Turkey, the police don't have to have proof to charge you with something, they only have to have suspicion. They don't have free speech, if you express free speech, you go to jail. The Mount of Turkish citizens that are prosecuted are just 1/7 the amount of Americans prosecuted. Turkey abolished their death penalty, death sentences were replaced with aggravated life imprisonment. Software piracy is three times higher in turkey than in America. Sam and Ali

Iraq vs USA
Iraq is ranked 6th with 33 executions and USA is ranked 6th with 42 and that is 27% more than Iraq. Iraq has 20% more murders than we do and is ranked 82nd and USA is ranked 88th. The Iraqi piracy rate is 85% and the piracy rate is USA is 20%, we are ranked 107th and Iraq is ranked 11th. The punishment for stealing is amputation of a hand and after a repeated offense a foot. Qiasa is the Islamic principle which means a eye for an eye, this includes murder and battery. Diyya is compensation paid to heirs of a victim, which means "blood money" or "ransom". Hudud means "limits" it is the most serious category includes crimes specified by the Quran. Includes drinking, theft, highway robbery, illegal sexual intercourse, apostasy which is blasphemy. As apposed to other legal systems Islamic law divides crimes into four different categories depending on the nature of the crime.

America has seven times the number of jails found in Italy, mainly due to the population differences. America also has four times the amount of overall crime as Italy. About half of Italy's population will be convicted of piracy in there lifetime, compared to America's 20%. Car theft is four times more likely to occur in the United States than in Italy. Only 54% of Italy's population believes in the efficiency of their police forces, compared to America's 89% belief.

About half of Italy's population will be convicted of piracy in there lifetime, compared to America's 20%; this is probably because the enforcement of punishment for this crime is taken much more seriously here in America. Car theft is four times more likely to occur in the United States than in Italy, this is probably due to our overwhelmingly larger population. Only 54% of Italy's population believes in the efficiency of their police forces, compared to America's 89% belief. Americans probably have this greater faith in our police forces because of their success.

Australia has 116 prisoners per 100,000 people and American has 715 per 100,000. Australia's total crime victims are 30.1% compared to Americans which is 21.1%. In Australia a person has a 1% chance of being raped compared to American where you have a 0.4% chance. The punishment for rape in Australia averages between 8 and 10 years. The penalty for murder in Australia is up to life in prison with a minimum of 20 years or 25 if it is a murder of a child or public official . However in Queensland South Australia and the Northern Territory murder is mandatory life. The homicide rate in America is 9.1 per 100,000 people and in Australia it's 1.9 per 100,000 people. The penalty for treason in Australia is life in prison.

The United States and Ecuador vary greatly in many areas of crime statistics. Per capita, Ecuador has a higher rate of robbery, auto theft, and murder. However, the U.S. has more prisons and prisoners per capita. This could be a direct result of the strict legal system in the United States. Ecuador's consequences, like many countries, are not as harsh as the United States.

The crime stats between the united states and Germany are substantially different. In Germany, there are 250969 drug offenses per 100000 people when there are only 500000 drug offenses per 100000 people. The penalty for drug offenses in Germany is a minor infraction with possible fines. Depending on the severity, there could be jail time. The amount of murders by youths in America is 8226 per year which is 52 times higher than Germany's. The total crime stats in Germany are 6507394 which is 83 percent less than America's which is 11877218. The software piracy rate in America is 20 percent while in Germany it is 27 percent. The punishment for software piracy in America starts with a warning to stop and then the punishments become harsher if the person does not listen. Germany wanted to make the punishment so that the offender couldn't get on the Internet at all for repeated offenses. Car theft rates in America are 17 times the rate in Germany. The punishment in America is punishable as a felony and up to three years in jail. For a very in depth summary of some differences in statistics for Germany and America look at bus.ojp.usdoj.gov/content/pub/PDF/gap.pdf

Comparing and contrasting the USA to Malaysia, there are multiple differences. For example, the total crime rate in the US is 11,877,218, while Malaysia's rate is 167,173. The numbers are substantially different from one another. Also, the drug offense in the US is 560/100,000 and Malaysia has 49/100,000. Another surprising rate is the amount of murder. The US is rated a 5, but Malaysia isn't far behind with 2.3. I believe the differences are due to the population numbers. In Malaysia there is an estimated 25 million people, but the US has about 313 million people.

America has a higher crime rate then Denmark does. We have more drug offenses then they do in Denmark and our murder rate from youth is 410 times more in the United States. Denmark has the same punishment for drugs as the U.S but they don't make a big deal over marijuana like parts of the U.S does. Hard drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy are used more in Denmark then U.S. Denmark is ranked 19 th for car theft and United States is ranked first. With murder rate U.S is 1 out of 36 and Denmark is 29th out of 36.

South Africa's drug offenses per 100,000 people is higher than America's with 53,810 compared to Americas which is 560.1. South Africa also outweighs America with their murders with firearms being 31,918 compared to America's which is 9,369.But America outweighs South Africa with car thefts being 1,246,096 compared to South Africa's 93,133. Since the outlawing of capital punishment in South Africa, the maximum punishment for murder is life imprisonment. The minimum sentence is 15 years. The punishment for murder is stricter in America because some states still employ the death penalty. This makes the prison population higher in South Africa since they outlawed the death penalty in 1989.

When comparing the United States to Columbia we noticed that the crime rate in Columbia is significantly lower than America's. The number of crimes committed annually in Columbia is 214,192 in comparison to the massive number of 11,877,218 which is the US's number of crimes. The number of prisoners in Columbia when this data was taken was 54,034 which is 36 times less than the amount in America at that point in time. In Columbia, most of the murders are committed by youth. The biggest crime there is gun violence in which they're ranked 2nd.

The crime rates in Thailand are very low compared to the United states. The total number of crimes in Thailand is 565,108 and the total crimes in the United states is 11,877,218. In Thailand there is 3,276 car thefts and there is 1,246,096 car thefts in the US. Drug offense punishments in Thailand are sever with a long jail sentence, major fines, or if a serous offense a death penalty. For the United states a drug offense results in jail time of heavy fines. As for theft Thailand criminals face a long jail sentence and in the US criminals face jail as well. For homicide in Thailand results in a very long sentence and in the United states depending on the kind of homicide results in jail or in some states death. So the number of crimes in Thailand are a lot less than the US. Matthew Johnson. Jr. McIntire

United States vs. Vietnam
The United States has a much higher execution rate along with the number of people murdered per 100,000. The United States ranks first in the number of prisoners while Vietnam is ranked 36th. Female prisoners in the United States ranks 9th in the world while Vietnam is 38th. Vietnam beats the United States in on category, software piracy. They are ranked 10th while the United States is ranked 107th. The Unites States is the world's largest consumer of cocaine, heroin, marijuana, ecstasy, methamphetamine. While Vietnam is only a minor consumer of these drugs. The United States has a much harsher laws so the number of people in prisons will be higher then that of Vietnam.

America is overall criminal standings are higher than Mexico's other than in software piracy, foreign prisoners and murders committed by teens. The percentage for software piracy in Mexico is 61% and America is 20%. This is mostly because of Mexico's ineffective reinforcement and in America the programs and the companies that make them make sure that the pirated software can't get past the installment process. The percentage of foreign prisoners in Mexico is 0.9 of all prisoners and in America it is 0.5 . In Mexico it is mostly drug trafficking and in America it is most because of illegal immigration. In Mexico the number of murders by teens is 15.3 per capita because of poverty and American teen committed murders is 11.4 per capita because of gangs.

U.S. V Iran

The incarceration rate in the United States is much higher than the incarceration rate in Iran. The U.S. has 2,019,234 prisoners (ranked 1st), and Iran has 163,526 (ranked 10th). The punishment in the United States is much less harsh than the punishment in Iran, for example capital punishment in Iran is possible for murder, rape, adultery, pedophilia, sodomy, drug trafficking, armed robbery, kidnapping, terrorism and treason. Where most of those crimes are punishable by jail time in the U.S. Unfortunately, there is not much information posted about the drug offenses or other crime statistics in Iran.

The United States has a larger number in everything compared to Azerbaijan except for software piracy which is 92% in Azerbaijan to 20% in the U.S. The penalty of murder in Azerbaijan is death penalty. The penalty for a drug offense is also a death penalty in the country of Azerbaijan. Driving under the influence in Azerbaijan could land you in jail immediately. In Azerbaijan they're a lot more strict when punishing their people then we are in the United States.
